The New World Map Is Comming
On September 4, 2026, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to promote the new map standard of the “Equal Earth Projection“, which mainly adjusts the visual proportion of maps rather than national boundaries. As of September 7, 2026, there have been no major new country or border changes in the global political map, and the so-called “latest map” mainly refers to the update of projection technology.

Core Changes of the New Map Standard
Projection Method Upgrade: The United Nations encourages all countries to gradually adopt the “Equal Earth projection“(Right) developed in 2018, replacing the Mercator projection (Left) that has been used for more than 400 years.
More Realistic Visual Presentation: The new map can accurately show the relative area of all continents, correcting the visual illusion of the Mercator projection that the area of high-latitude regions (such as Europe and North America) is enlarged while equatorial regions (such as Africa) are reduced.
Area Comparison: On the old map, Africa and Greenland look almost the same size. In fact, the area of Africa is 14 times that of Greenland, and the new map restores this real proportion.
Voting Result: The resolution was passed with 164 votes in favor, 1 vote against (the United States), and 6 abstentions, showing the widespread support of the international community for a more just map presentation.
Non-mandatory Nature: The resolution is not legally binding and does not prohibit the use of Mercator maps. Instead, it encourages education, science and technology, and government agencies to understand and inform the public of the limitations of flat maps.
Political Map and Boundary Status
No Boundary Adjustment: The UN resolution clearly states that it does not involve political mapping, including changes to international boundaries, disputed territories or place names. There are no new countries established or major changes in sovereign status in 2026.
Positions of Various Countries: Countries including India emphasized during the vote that the new map standard does not change the official depiction of each country’s sovereign territory, and the national boundaries must still be drawn according to the official maps of each country.
Visual Impact: After switching to the new projection, high-latitude countries such as Russia and Canada will visually “shrink”, while equatorial countries such as Africa and South America will have an increased visual proportion. This is only a visual correction, not an actual change in national land area.
Map Resource Acquisition and Usage
Official Channels: The United Nations has released relevant press releases on its official website, but the specific download resources of the official standard map may be gradually launched as the resolution is promoted. It is recommended to follow the updates on the UN official website.
Application Scenarios: The new map is more suitable for scenarios such as education and displaying the relative area of the world; if accurate navigation or direction maintenance is required, the Mercator projection still has its professional value.
